Trevor Noah reacts viscerally to Black Lives Matter co-founder's home visit from the FBI

Trevor Noah reacts viscerally to Black Lives Matter co-founder's home visit from the FBI

On Friday afternoon the FBI visited Alicia Garza, one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement, because a man who was associated with white nationalist groups had her name on a list, along with other activists' names. The man was recently arrested on a weapons charge. On Friday night, Garza told Trevor Noah about the unexpected visit on The Daily Show.

"This is because we push so hard to make sure Black people are treated just like everybody else," Garza said to Noah about why her name was on the list. "We're not organizing for a world in which Black people are more powerful than anybody else." Read more...

Scientists will destroy first 'murder hornet' nest found in Washington state

Scientists will destroy first 'murder hornet' nest found in Washington state

Remember "murder hornets"? You know, the two-inch long wasps that stoked unreasonable fear in people all around the United States.

Well, scientists in the U.S. have located the first nest of the invasive species in Blaine, Wash. and they plan to get rid of it on Saturday, the Associated Press reported. The discovery took weeks and lots of dental floss, which was used to tie tracking devices to three hornets. And it worked; one of the insects led researchers to the location of the nest in a tree.

The nest contains about 100 to 200 hornets and is about the size of a basketball. Though Asian giant hornets aren't a big threat to humans, they can deliver a painful sting. To protect themselves, workers will wear thick protective suits and face shields, as the hornets can spit painful venom in addition to stinging.  Read more...

Here's how to check if your mail-in ballot has been received and counted

Here's how to check if your mail-in ballot has been received and counted

If your mail-in ballot is cast, but no one is around to count it, did it make a sound?

The U.S. presidential election is fast approaching, and people keep telling you this is the most important election in a generation. The coronavirus, of course, means that when it comes to safely casting your vote this election is also one of the most unusual. Thankfully, large swaths of the country (but sadly not all) have a simple way to confirm that their residents' mail-in ballots have been received and counted.

In previous elections, the ability to check on the status of one's mail-in ballot might have seemed like a neat little democracy bonus feature. This year, with the president spreading misinformation about the vote-by-mail process, and questionable goings on at the United States Postal Service, checking that your vote was received feels more like a requirement.  Read more...

The legend of Keyboard Cat: How a man and his cat(s) won the internet lottery

In Tales of the Early Internet, Mashable explores online life through 2007 — back before social media and the smartphone changed everything.

Charlie Schmidt is lucky, and he knows it.

What else could explain it? Millions of people have cats. Millions more have cameras. And yet in one remarkable, silly, charming, captivating moment those two things came together in a way that would change the world wide web forever.

“I expected somehow that somebody like you would call me,” the creator of the iconic Keyboard Cat muses in a conversation had over a decade since his viral hit. "What do you want to know?" Read more...

Future of Uber, Lyft on the line in fight to keep drivers from becoming employees

Future of Uber, Lyft on the line in fight to keep drivers from becoming employees

The future of the gig economy is on the ballot this November. But there are only two choices: one that changes how ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft operate and another that cedes control to the app makers over the drivers and workers.

That's why Uber and other gig-based apps have raised $200 million to convince California voters to vote "yes" on Proposition 22, according to California campaign finance records. If passed, Prop. 22 would keep drivers and delivery workers as independent contractors, as they've been since the apps started. The companies' huge push is even more cutthroat after a late October court ruling determined Uber and Lyft must treat California drivers as employees. Read more...

How tech can help you thrive amid the pandemic winter blues

How tech can help you thrive amid the pandemic winter blues

Winter is coming. And this year, your mental health may take a greater hit than normal given the coronavirus pandemic.

COVID-19 is already contributing to skyrocketing stress levels. More than three quarters of respondents to an annual survey from the American Psychological Association said the pandemic was a major source of stress.

Importantly, it's unclear how and when this will end. After a brief dip, coronavirus cases are surging once again, a trend scientists worry could continue into winter. Colder temperatures, will force more of us indoors, likely ramping up cases

Staying inside and keeping to ourselves more often, may drive us to screens for entertainment and distraction, says Doreen Dodgen-Magee, a psychologist who writes and speaks about technology's effect on us. Read more...

7 DIY Halloween candy delivery systems for socially distant trick-or-treating

7 DIY Halloween candy delivery systems for socially distant trick-or-treating

It's a weird time.

The coronavirus pandemic rages on and it could care less about our favorite holidays.

So, yeah, Halloween will be a bit more complicated this year.

We've already outlined ways you can attempt to celebrate Halloween safely, but what about trick-or-treating?

Traditional, door-to-door trick-or-treating is probably a bad idea. It's high risk. But if you feel like you must take kids trick-or-treating, you should at least make sure everyone is masked up and distanced.

"I think if people really want to go and have that traditional experience, just make sure to wear a mask, stay in your group or your bubble, and not come within six feet of other people," Dr. Mariea Snell, assistant director of the Online Doctor of Nursing Practice program at Maryville University, told Mashable. "If you're ringing a doorbell to trick-or-treat, you should take six steps back after you've done that so you're not too close to someone in their home."  Read more...
