Watch the trainwreck Trump interview moment being compared to 'Spinal Tap' and 'Veep'

Watch the trainwreck Trump interview moment being compared to 'Spinal Tap' and 'Veep'

If you thought bragging about "acing" a dementia test was as bad as it got, Donald Trump has another wild interview highlights reel for you.

News site Axios' weekly HBO show aired an interview with the president on Monday night that made the Chris Wallace shitshow look like a successfully muffled fart.

During the 40-minute sit-down, Trump repeated his well-wishes for accused child sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, saying he offered them simply because "her boyfriend" Jeffrey Epstein "was either killed or committed suicide in jail"; refused to say whether he found the late congressman and civil rights campaigner John Lewis "impressive", only complaining that Lewis skipped Trump's inauguration; and waved away questions about U.S. intelligence suggesting Russia offered a bounty on American troopsRead more...

WhatsApp now lets you fact-check forwarded messages

If you've received a link offering a miracle cure for COVID-19, you should know that it's fake. And yet, so many users just keep forwarding such messages, perhaps with good intentions, but ultimately adding to the confusion and polluting the internet with false information.

Now, WhatsApp has added a new feature, making it easier to check whether a piece of information is accurate. On forwarded messages, users will see a magnifying glass button. Clicking on it will open a Google search query for this information, which should typically resolve any doubts you might have about its accuracy.

WhatsApp points out that doing this uploads the message to the phone's browser, without revealing the content of the message to WhatsApp.  Read more...

Seth Meyers slams White House's 'evil and stupid' reason for ditching its coronavirus testing plan

The U.S. now accounts for almost a quarter of all coronavirus deaths around the world, with the country's testing capabilities still woefully ill-equipped to handle the pandemic. Now Vanity Fair has reported the White House actually developed a coordinated national testing plan — but shelved it it believing the coronavirus would subside, and that it was primarily impacting blue states anyway.

"So they had a national testing plan, then scrapped it so they could blame the whole thing on Democratic governors," said Late Night host Seth Meyers.

"Not only is that evil and stupid, this is an infectious disease. This virus has travelled all over the world, did they not realise it could travel to red states too? 'It's a perfect plan! As long as no-one from New York ever goes to Florida.'" Read more...

Get over 50 hours of training in machine learning for under £30

TL;DR: The Machine Learning Master Class bundle is on sale for £29.85 as of August 4, saving you 91% on list price.

Thanks to developing artificial intelligence technologies, computer are smarter than ever before. Along with those technologies has come a relatively new category of computer science called machine learning, or ML.

Similar to statistics, ML involves computer systems that utilise algorithms to automatically learn about data, recognise patterns, and make decisions, all without outside intervention or explicit directions from human beings. In the real world, you can find it being used in smart assistants like Siri and the Amazon Echo, in online fraud detection services, in the facial recognition feature that identifies photos of you on Facebook, and more recently, in Tesla's self-driving car. Gaming community hotline offers specialized help with harassment, work stress, and mental health

Gaming community hotline offers specialized help with harassment, work stress, and mental health

Though video games are meant to be fun, they aren't all friendship and frolicking. Toxic behavior, harassment, and other mental health dangers are rampant not only in games, but in the games industry as well. Now, a new hotline is helping people dealing with these problems.

Launched today in the U.S., the Games and Online Harassment Hotline (GOHH) provides free, anonymous emotional support to anyone in the gaming community who needs it. While other mental health helplines such as the Crisis Text Line, National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, and National Sexual Assault Hotline already exist, GOHH is different in that its agents are specifically trained to deal with issues in gaming. This means you won't have to explain exactly what swatting is or what you mean by "crunch" before you can get help. Read more...

Twitter may have to pay hundreds of millions in fines for privacy screw-up

Twitter may have to pay hundreds of millions in fines for privacy screw-up

As far as mistakes go, Twitter's notorious two-factor authentication boondoggle could end being a costly one.

Buried deep inside the company's Monday 10Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission is a note that the social media giant might end up on the receiving end of up to $250 million in fines. At issue was Twitter "inadvertently" (it swears) using users' phone numbers for advertising from 2013 to 2019 — numbers that were only provided for security purposes. The Federal Trade Commission apparently didn't take kindly to that, and sent a draft complaint Twitter's way on July 28.

For those blessed to not remember every single Twitter privacy scandal, it's worth a reminder just how problematic the 2019 revelation that Twitter matched some users to advertisers' marketing lists based on their 2FA numbers actually was.  Read more...

Google smart speakers secretly updated to listen for more than wake words

Google smart speakers secretly updated to listen for more than wake words

Google Home smart speakers, the company dryly warns in a note buried deep on a support page, can "incorrectly" record their users even when they haven't first said an activating wake phrase like "hey, Google." It just so happens that, at least for a brief period of time this summer, those microphone-enabled devices were doing exactly that.

The company admitted Monday, following a report by Protocol, that it had updated an unspecified number of Google Assistant-enabled devices to respond to auditory cues beyond the user-specified wake phrase. Google told Protocol this was a mistake that was quickly fixed, but did not appear to address the larger privacy concerns that such a mistake signifies. After all, how are users supposed to trust a live microphone in their home if someone can remotely update it to be even more invasive without their knowledge? Read more...

8 of the best laptop brands for 2020

8 of the best laptop brands for 2020

To survive in today's world, a laptop is pretty much a necessity. Whether you're a contractor using a 2-in-1 to show off floor plans, or a college student who needs a Chromebook for class, they make life much more manageable in terms of keeping track of your goals and getting things done.

But with all the different big-name brands like Apple, Dell, and Microsoft offering every type of laptop you could possibly imagine, the waters can get a little muddy when it comes to choosing the right one for you.

SEE ALSO: Best laptops for kids

At first glance, that's not an easy question to answer. Since there are laptops capable of doing everything you could want or need, it almost seems impossible to find "the one." It can be even more difficult when trying to separate these devices by brand, and trying to find out what advantages some companies offer over others. Read more...
