Rick and Morty are back in town in new season 4 trailer

Rick and Morty are back in town in new season 4 trailer

There's still a month to go before Rick and Morty returns on May 3 for the second half of its fourth season. It feels more like a lifetime away right now, especially considering how long March was. Fortunately, Adult Swim has dropped a new video to help us with the wait.

In a rollicking trailer set to Thin Lizzy's 'The Boys Are Back In Town,' Rick continues to drag Morty through dangerous interdimensional hijinks in the fourth season's final five episodes. This time, said exploits involve vats of acid, tentacled monsters, S.W.A.T., and running naked and screaming. The duo also get an "unnecessarily badass suit-up" though, so it isn't all terrible. 'The Magicians' series finale gestures at completion with a pile of gifts

'The Magicians' series finale gestures at completion with a pile of gifts

If Syfy's The Magicians were a person, its love language would be gifts.

Its greatest moments were well-earned treats dispensed to an audience careful enough to pay attention, like Season 3's "A Life in the Day" episode that gave Quelliot shippers an entire episode of Quentin and Elliot's love, its infinitely gif-able pop culture references, and the show's many delightful musical numbers. Its weakest moments came when The Magicians failed to tie those moments together and wound up tangled in its own plot ribbon.

It makes sense, then, that the finale starts with a false Christmas. After our heroes are rescued from their latest heist by Santa Claus, the jolly old magician decorates their apartment with Christmas cheer and leaves each character a gift of some significance. It's not Christmas in the show, and the truncated gift-receiving scene highlights how sad it is that The Magicians will never air a full holiday special, but the sentiment behind giving each character one last token set an apt tone for the beginning of the end.  Read more...

Coronavirus is not the man now dog: YTMND is back, and just in time

Coronavirus is not the man now dog: YTMND is back, and just in time

The pandemic profoundly alters our sense of time. Quarantine grinds lives to a halt, injecting them with untold levels of stress and acute danger. Monday bleeds into Tuesday, into Friday, into Monday again — the days losing distinction, but still representing tectonic shifts as we squint to better see the coronavirus's devastating effects looming on the horizon.

And then, like a unicorn-shaped floatie drifting into view as we struggle against the waves, You're The Man Now Dog (YTMND) decides to pop back into our lives. Surely, this will not be the thing that saves us, but damn if it isn't a welcome sight.  Read more...

It took a coronavirus outbreak for self-driving cars to become more appealing

It took a coronavirus outbreak for self-driving cars to become more appealing

Suddenly, a future full of self-driving cars isn't just a sci-fi pipe dream. What used to be considered a scary, uncertain technology for many Americans looks more like an effective tool to protect ourselves from a fast-spreading, infectious disease.

With COVID-19 — the name for the disease caused by the new coronavirus — keeping most of us housebound, it's harder to get around or bring in supplies safely. Forget about socializing, just stocking up on groceries, toiletries, and basic medicines and products is a risky challenge. Suddenly having robots and computers help us out doesn't seem so far-fetched. All that money that's been funneled into testing self-driving cars — $27.5 billion in 2018, according to data company Statista — is starting to look more and more worthwhile. Read more...

Instagram's 'On This Day' notifications are a jarring reminder of life before coronavirus

Instagram's 'On This Day' notifications are a jarring reminder of life before coronavirus

My friend Grace and I are lying on the floor, laughing, with barely an inch between us. It's the end of the first raucous night of her bachelorette weekend, one month until her wedding, scheduled for April. And, oh yeah, it's 2018 — before things like bachelorette parties and weddings were canceled for the sake of public health and the greater good.

Instagram's "On This Day" feature surfaces some of the stories and posts you published one, two, five years ago on the same date. Rolled out for stories in January 2019, it's a typically frothy product that taps into the pull of nostalgia to remind you of the good times, and, hey, maybe help you generate even more content for the social network while you're at it. It's Instagram's take on the concept popularized a decade ago by Timehop, which has also had integrations with Facebook, and which resulted in similar products in Apple Photos, Snapchat, and more.  Read more...

YouTube is working on a TikTok competitor called 'Shorts'

YouTube is working on a TikTok competitor called 'Shorts'

TikTok, which recently hit 41 million daily active users outside of China, may soon have some real competition on its hands.

YouTube is currently working on a new feature called Shorts, which aims to rival TikTok, according to The Information.

Shorts will exist inside the YouTube mobile app as a feature, states the report, and not as a stand-alone product.

Lip sync videos are incredibly popular on TikTok, largely aided by the editing tools the app includes to help facilitate their creation. To compete with the viral app founded by the China-based Bytedance, YouTube plans to leverage its large catalog of licensed music. The video platform has been an established music video home to many of the world’s biggest record labels and artists. Read more...

Boring phone game Wordscapes is also a lovely self-isolation activity

Boring phone game Wordscapes is also a lovely self-isolation activity

Like everyone else, I wanted to play Animal Crossing: New Horizons during social distancing. Unfortunately, this wasn't in the cards for me: The Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite are pretty much sold out, and I cannot afford to pay $800 for one on eBay. (This is maybe not the wisest time to become a gamer from scratch.)

So my isolation game of choice ended up being a little different. It's a word puzzle game on my phone that is not new, features zero adorable characters, and is not particularly collaborative. In fact, it is a little boring. It's also doing wonders for my mental health right now. Read more...

Casper Pillow review: A down-like, bouncy fluff for combo sleepers

Casper Pillow review: A down-like, bouncy fluff for combo sleepers

Spending more than $10 or $20 on a pillow can seem frivolous when other budgeting categories seem much more pressing.

It's like we reserve fancy, fluffy pillows for hotel beds and are fine with sleeping on shitty pillows at home. Flat? Lumpy? Absolutely no neck support or malleability? Questionable stains? That's just how it is — or is it? I think the Original Casper Pillow is luxurious enough to change anyone's mind, even people who wouldn't dare to splurge on bedding in the past. Also, it's less than $100 and 100% machine washable.

Is the Casper Pillow comfortable?

Upon unzipping the pillow to see what's up with this pillow-in-a-pillow business, I discovered that it's more of a small pillow inside an extra-thick case with a fill of its own. Casper's double chamber design strikes a comfortable, moldable balance that has more bounce than your average down-alternative pillow. Read more...

Coronavirus quarantine has us all feeling like teens again

Coronavirus quarantine has us all feeling like teens again

A few weeks ago (or maybe it was days — time means nothing to me anymore), a push notification on my phone alerted me that my friend had tagged me in her Instagram story.

Given that I hadn't seen her — or anyone besides my roommate — since I started self-isolating almost a month ago, I was curious as to what it could be. Since there were no new photos of us together, say on a night out or at dinner, I assumed it would be a "throwback" to a time before the coronavirus, where we were free to go out and dance and hug as we always did.

Instead, I was met with a chain message: "Draw a carrot! Tag five friends!"  Read more...
